Roads
Japanese Toll Roads are excellent. Their traffic routing is intelligent, they are of high quality and well organized. They allow you to advance fast, but due to the sound barriers they are less useful for sightseeing.
The toll free highways are oftentimes built like the toll roads, but they also lead through cities and towns, and therefore there are many crossroads and traffic lights, slowing you down considerably.
But, on the other hand, they allow us to see much of the country, which is why they are our preferred .choice. Sometimes, we happen to encounter one of these loop-bridges that go in complete circles, and they are lots of fun! Most of the time, the views from these highways are just phenomenal, but sometimes they lead through mountainous areas and can make us break the occasional sweat.
Straßen
Japanische Mautstraßen sind hervorragend. Sie haben eine intelligente Straßenführung, sind von bester Qualität und hervorragend organisiert. Darauf kommt man schnell voran, aber wegen der Schallschutzwände sind sie zum Sightseeing weniger geeignet.
Die kostenlosen Bundesstraßen sind oftmals autobahnähnlich ausgebaut, führen aber auch durch Städte und Gemeinden, und sie haben viele Kreuzungen und Ampeln. Dafür sieht man aber viel vom Land, weswegen sie unsere bevorzugte Wahl sind. Manchmal begegnet man einer dieser Loop-Bridges, die komplette 360 Grad Kreisel machen, die machen Spaß! Meistens ist die Aussicht von diesen Straßen phänomenal, aber manchmal führen sie durch bergige Gegenden und können uns Schweiß auf die Stirn treiben.

Sleeping
Scattered along the toll-roads, there are toll-roadside stations. They are spacious, very well equipped with toilets, restaurants, stores, showers, trash- and recycling stations, and much more. These stations also serve as Truck stops, and the trucks let the engines idle all night, therefore it can get quite noisy .
The roadside stations on the highways, called Michi-no-eki, also serve as outlets for regional products and specialties. Oftentimes, there are farmers markets, and in the stores they sell local crafts, regional specialties or seasonal products. The Japanese love them for buying omiyage, presents and souvenirs from their trips, and this is why they are very nicely displayed and packaged.
The michi-no-eki are often placed in pretty or idyllic locations with beautiful views, and it can get very dark and quiet at night, allowing for some stargazing..
In addition to the roadside stations, it is possible to spend the night at campgrounds, RV parks, auto-camps or simply in public parks or parking lots, as long as they are open 24 hours.
Übernachten
Entlang der Mautstraßen gibt es Autobahnraststätten. Sie sind großflächig angelegt, verfügen über Toiletten, Duschen, Restaurants, Geschäfte, Müll- und Recyclingstationen und vieles mehr. Allerdings übernachten hier auch die großen Lastwagen, die den Motor die ganze Nacht laufen lassen, und daher ist es et oftmals etwas laut.
Die Raststätten an den Bundesstraßen, die Michi-no-eki genannt werden, dienen auch als Verkaufsstellen für regionale Produkte und Spezialitäten. Oft gibt es Bauernmärkte hier, und in den Geschäften werden regionale Spezialitäten, saisonale Produkte oder Handwerksgut verkauft. Sie sind sehr beliebt bei den Japanern, die hier Souvenirs und Mitbringsel von ihren Ausflügen kaufen. Deswegen werden diese sehr ästhetisch und hübsch verpackt dargeboten.
Diese Raststätten sind oft in idyllischen Landschaften mit toller Aussicht gelegen, und es kann in der Nacht ziemlich dunkel werden, so dass man die Sterne sehen kann.
Neben den Raststätten kann man auch auf Campingplätzen, RV-parks und Autocamps übernachten, oder einfach in öffentlichen Parks oder auf Parkplätzen, solange diese rund um die Uhr geöffnet sind
Toilets and personal hygiene
When it comes to toilets, Japan is undoubtedly unbeatable. Toilets can be found everywhere, and in general, they are really clean. Most toilets are modern-style bidet toilets with heated seats, self-disinfection and noise cancelling. They also provide disinfectant, so that the client can clean the seats before using the toilet.
Many michi-no-eki raise them to another level: well organized, with a floor plan, family sections, changing -and nursing rooms, accessible and gender-neutral stalls, and the washrooms are always nicely decorated with fresh flowers. The most recent models even have spaces to set down keys and cellphones and a hole to hang an umbrella. Ladies toilets often have grooming rooms with large mirrors.
In some stations, they are placed indoors, so that they stay warm and dry, even in mountainous regions or on rain days. Oh, and yes, they are always free!

Toiletten und Körperpflege
Wenn es um Toiletten geht, ist Japan einfach unschlagbar. Toiletten findet man überall, und in der Regel sind sie sehr sauber. Die meisten verfügen über moderne Bidet-Toiletten mit beheizten Klobrillen, eine Desinfektierungsfunktion und Geräuschblocker. Sie stellen immer auch Desinfektionsmittel zur Verfügung, damit man die Brille noch selbst saubermachen kann.
Die Raststätten erheben sie nochmal auf einen weiteren Level. Gut organisiert, mit einem Grundriss und einem Familienabteil, Wickel- und Stillraum, Behindertentoilette, eine Geschlechtsneutrale. Und die Waschräume sind immer schön mit frischen Blumen dekoriert. Die modernsten Modell haben Ablagen für Schlüssel, Hand- uns ein Loch, um den Schirm einzuhängen. Damentoiletten verfügen oft über einen Schminkraum. In manchen Stationen sind sie innen, so dass sie warm und trocken bleiben, auch in den Bergen oder bei Regen.
