Let’s Hit the Road

Saturday morning, and we’re all excited to start our road trip. This shall be a day of many firsts! Our van rental company, Japan Campers, is located just south of Narita, but the commute is so much easier this time, now that we are experienced public transportation users. They have a free shuttle service and pick us up at Narita station, and on the way to the rental office, the driver already gives us some advice regarding a hike we had planned. Check out is smooth and easy going, and we finally take ownership of our brand-new motorhome and hit the road!

Benoit, our driving ninja, tackles the challenge of left-side driving like a champion, and after filling up at our very first conveyor-belt sushi shop, we make it all the way to our first overnight stop: A former elementary school that has been turned into a Roadside station (Michi-no-eki), complete with toilets, a resting room with massage chairs, a farmers market, several restaurants, playgrounds, and more. We go grocery shopping, eat our first bento box dinners and hit our beds.

The next morning, we leave the Michi-no eki, park the van at the ferry landing in the small town of Hota, and head to the trailhead of Sharikimichi trail to hike up Nokogiriyama Mountain. It is a steep trail with lots and lots of very high steps, and every now and then, we meet steep walls with huge square holes. The path is dotted with information boards, and thus we learn that this mountain was used as a quarry in the past. The only other hikers we meet until up to the very top, are Japanese, and we realize that this is not a typical tourist spot. Once we arrive on the top, breathless, our effort is being rewarded with amazing views of Tokyo Bay, the coastline and Fuji-san! On our way back to the motorhome, we stop by at the Music & Caffe, a quirky, whimsical café, run by two elderly ladies, full of random memorabilia and a gorgeous view. Then it is time to get back on the road and move on to our next destination before sundown: Hakone! Traffic compromises this goal, but on the way, we cross the bridge over Tokyo Bay over to Kawasaki, where we are treated to this beautiful sunset above Fuji-san.
