This is a post about an inspiring story, the likes of which could only be written in Japan; and you will understand why as I walk you through it. The story takes place in Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu Island, and starts in 2016 with a powerful earthquake: The so-called Kumamoto Earthquake cost 274 lives, injured 2800, displaced 180.000 people, and caused severe damage to historic castles (including Kumamoto Castle), roads, bridges, and the Kyushu Shinkansen line. Landslides buried homes in mountainous areas. We can still see some of the destruction or guess it, due the abnormally high number of new houses in some areas.

Dieser Eintrag handelt von einer inspirierenden Geschichte. Eine die so nur in Japan geschrieben werden kann. Und im Laufe deiner Lektüre wirst du verstehen, warum. Sie findet in der Präfektur Kumamoto auf Kyushu statt und beginnt 2016 mit einem gewaltigen Erdbeben. Das sogenannte Kumamoto Erdbeben kostete 274 Menschen das Leben, verletzte 2800 und 180.000 Menschen verloren ihr Zuhause. Das Erdbeben hat bedeutende Schäden an historischen Schlössern, Straßen, Brücken und der Kyushu Schinkansen Linie verursacht. Häuser in bergigen Gegenden wurden vonm Erdrutschen begraben. Auch heute kann man noch Schäden sehen, oder sie zumindest, dank der ungewöhnlich hohen Zahl an Neubauten in manchen Gegenden erahnen.
In the wake of this event, manga artist Eiichiro Oda, a Kumamoto native and creator of the hit manga One Piece, sent a letter to the prefecture, offering that he would definitely help with the reconstruction effort.
This was the beginning of the One Piece Kumamoto Revival Project, which is a collaboration between the Kumamoto Prefecture and Eiichiro Oda. It started with the installation of a Luffy statue on the Kumamoto Prefectural Government Office Promenade. (Luffy D. Monkey is the main character of the manga, a young boy who wants to be the King of the pirates, and who inspires many people on his way with his unshakable belief, that everything is possible if you just trust in yourself and are surrounded by the right people. Over time, in the manga, he assembles a crew of 9 members, also known as the Straw Hat Pirates, who each have their special abilities and personality traits, and who go through numerous adventures and challenges together). Over the course of 4 years, statues of all ten crew members have been installed in places in relation to their role in the manga, and the visitors coming to see them and buying related merchandise have largely contributed to the reconstruction or the rehabilitation of institutions.
But there was more: In his letter, Oda expressed his concern about the parents trying to shield their children from the worries and the sorrow following the immense destruction caused by the earthquake, and mentioned he wished to bring smiles back on the faces of the children and thus relief to the parents.
Therefore, school buses got wrapped in pictures of the manga characters, as well as a tram; a number of events were created, like the Kumamon Fan Festival, the Kumamoto Castle Marathon, a stamp rally. In addition to the statues, One Piece panels got installed at the Kumamoto Airport and also a Revival Project ceramic panel. Even a pirate flag was raised on the flagpole of the government building (the irony being, that in the manga, the Straw Hats are actually fighting against the government!). More initiatives followed, like, a collaboration with Pokemon Go and the Japan Railways Hohi Main line who created the colorful Sunny Train (The name of their pirate ship was the Thousand Sunny). And the projects go on to this day! But mostly, all of these projects and initiatives brought hope and joy to the community and put smiles back on the children’s faces.
Being huge One Piece fans ourselves, we were lucky enough to arrive in Kumamoto just in time when, due to the 10th anniversary of the earthquake, there was an exhibition at the local Modern Art Museum about the One Piece Kumamoto Revival Project - and it was free of charge!
It was truly heart-breaking to see the destruction done by the earthquake, but it was just as inspiring to see how these fictional characters brought a community together, and helped them keep their morals up during these dire times. And how they finally managed to ring the smiles back on the children's' faces.
We went to see the statues one by one, and there was always a line of fans admiring the art work while waiting patiently to take their picture. The saga goes on, and so does life in Kumamoto!

Kurz nach dem Erdbeben schickte Eiichiro Oda, ein Mangakünstler und Autor der Hit Mangaserie One Piece, der aus dieser Region stammt, einen Brief an die Präfektur Kumamoto, indem er seine Entschlossenheit bekundet, beim Wiederaufbau zu helfen.
Das war der Anfang des One Piece Kumamoto Revival Projects, einer Kooperation zwischen der Präfektur und Eiichiro Oda. Es begann mit dem Aubau einer Luffy-Statue auf der Promenade vor dem Präfekturalen Verwaltungsgebäude. (Luffy D. Monkey ist der Hauptdarsteller in dem Manga, ein Junge, dessen Traum es ist, König der Piraten zu werden, und der viele Menschen, denen er begegnet, mit seinem unerschütterlichen Glauben inspiriert, dass alles möglich ist, wenn man sich selber nur vertraut und sich mit den richtigen Menschen umgibt. Im Laufe des Mangas versammelt er eine 9-köpfige Piratenbande, die sogenannten Strohhutpiraten, die alle besondere Fähigkeiten und Charaktereigenschaften vorweisen, und gemeinsam viele Abenteuer und Herausforderungen erleben). Im Laufe von 4 Jahren werden von allen 10 Bandenmitgleidern Statuen an bestimmten Orten aufgestellt, die in einem Zusammenhang mit ihrer Rolle in dem Manga oder ihren Charaktereigenschaften stehen. Die Besucher, die kommen um diese Statuen zu sehen und auch die damit verbundenen Souvenirs kaufen, haben bisher schon erheblich zur Finanzierung des Wiederaufbaus und der Wiederbelebung von bestimmten Einrichtungen beigetragen.
Aber damit nicht genug: Oda drückte in seinem Brief auch seine Besorgnis darüber aus, dass die Eltern viel Kraft investierten, um ihre Kinder vor dem Schmerz und den Sorgen infolge der immensen Zerstörung zu schützen, und er wünschte sich, wieder ein Lächeln auf die Kindergesichter zaubern zu können und damit auch den Eltern Erleichterung zu verschaffen.
Dies führte zu einer Anzahl an Maßnahmen: Schulbusse und Straßenbahnen wurden mit Bildern des Mangas versehen, eine Reihe von Ereignissen wie das Kumamon Fan Festival, das Kumamoto Castle Marathon, eine Stempel Ralley wurden initiiert, am Kumamoto Flughafen und in der Stadt wurden Wände mit One Piece Bildern verkleidet. Und es wurde sogar die Piratenflagge der Strohhutpiraten vor dem Reigerungsgebäude gehisst (was sehr ironisch ist, denn im Manga bekämpfen de Piraten die extrem korrupte Weltregierung!). Außerdem wurde eine Kooperation mit Pokemon Go angekündigt und mit der Japan Railways Hohi Main line, die die farbenfrohe Sunny-Bahn (in Anspielung auf das Piraten Schiff, das Thousand Sunny heißt) ins Leben ruft. Die Projekte gehen weiter, aber das Wichtigste daran ist, dass sie den Menschen Hoffnung und Mut gemacht und wieder ein Lächeln auf die Kindergesichter gezaubert haben.
Wir sind selbst große One Piece Fans und wir hatten das Glück, dass gerade, als wir dort waren, anlässlich des 10. Jahrestages des Erdbebens im Kunstmuseum eine Austellung zum One Piece Kumamoto Revival Project stattfand, die auch noch kostenlos war. So herzzerbrechend es auch war, die Bilder der Zerstörung zu sehen, so inspirierend war es zu erkennen, wie fiktive Personen eine Gemeinschaft zusammenbringen, den Menschen Mut machen und die Moral heben können. Und letztendlich ein Lachen auf die Kindergesichter zauberten.
Wir haben jede Statue besucht, und jedes Mal gab es eine Warteschlange von Fans, die sie bewunderten, und geduldig darauf warteten, sich selber damit ablichten zu können. Die Saga geht weiter, genauso wie das Leben in Kumamoto.
